Fall 2015 Semester In Review

Hey everyone! Now that I'm officially done with finals and enjoying winter break I really wanted to just sit down and just sort of share some final thoughts on my first semester of college. So here are some thoughts on the semester!

It was much harder than I thought it would be.
Who would've thought my biology lab would take so much out of me?! HaHa. Not only that, being in total control and having total responsibility for your daily life has been way more difficult than I imagined. I was someone who thought high school was very easy, and expected college to be the same, however, I quickly learned that it does take a lot to be successful.

I have learned so much more about myself than I thought I ever would in college.
This semester really has taught me so much about myself. I've gotten to dig deeper into my beliefs (specifically when it comes to education). I've realized exactly how much I need and desire Jesus in my life. I've learned the true severity of my need for control (which I'm working on daily). I've learned just how important positivity is to me. I've learned that I am capable of being successful in college, even though it is difficult.

I am so proud of the direction I'm headed.
This semester I decided that I wish to double minor in Urban Youth and Communities and Sociology. I'm super proud of myself to be following my dreams and going forward with this despite the vast fear I still encounter at times.

I'm so glad I've met some of the people I have.
I have met some great friends and great professors that I believe have truly made this semester possible for me. Without them I really have no idea what I would've done. I'm so thankful and blessed to have people like them in my life!

I have had so much fun.
College has really offered me the opportunity to have so many different experiences that I've enjoyed so much. Sporting events, the Walk Now for Autism Speaks, and even deep discussions I've had in some of my classes have really made this semester great. I can't wait to see what fun and adventure I'll have in semesters to come!

I'm so glad I decided to live at home.
People are always asking me about my decision to live at home during college and I was unsure about it myself to be quite honest. However, this semester has really shown me that I did make the right choice. I need to have the ability to be on campus and be "in the know" but I also need time at home with my family to decompress. I need the 30 minute drive alone to relax. I need the little bit of normalcy my home brings at the end of the day. It may not be for everyone, but it was the right choice for me.

I'm right where I need to be.
There have been times where I've really soured some of my decisions. However, this semester has really shown me that I am making all the right decisions and I'm right where I need to be right now to succeed.

Overall, I'm so happy with how this semester went and am so ready to have a great break & then get back to next semester! To be truly honest, it's been the craziest semester of my life. But I'm so appreciative of every minute of it! Later in December or early in January I'll be writing about the upcoming Spring semester so look for that if you're interested!

An Open Letter to My "College" Friends

Dear "College" Friends,

It's so crazy to think that something as simple as orientation or a biology lab could be the start of friendships. But no matter how we met, there's some things I'd like to say.

Thank you so much. Thank you for being there for me when none of us knew exactly what we were doing. Thank you for sharing meals with me. Thank you for Starbucks dates. Thank you for laughing with me. Thank you for seeing me during my highs and lows. Thank you for complaining about random annoyances with me every once and a while. Thank you for encouraging me and allowing me to encourage you.

A lot of things have happened this semester. A lot of them we may still be processing. Some of them we may still be dealing with. But one thing that I'm thanking God for is the fact that I've met you. I hope we stay forever friends, no matter where life may take us.
You may not realize how important you are to me. And we may not be able to spend the time together I wish we could- But Thank you so much for being my friend.

Thanksgiving Break Recap!

Hey everyone! My thanksgiving break is over now and I'm back in classes- but I really wanted to talk a little bit about my break. I hope y'all enjoy when I share more about my daily life in blog posts like these.

So on Wednesday I spent a lot of time with my family. We went out to lunch and went shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond, World Market, and Publix. It may not sound like it, but it ended up being super fun. But before we left the house we had to snap a family picture with our dogs (Bandit & Panda)! It's really one of the best pictures we have as a family and I just love it!

On Thanksgiving I spent more time with my family! We watched the Macy's Perade, walked the dogs, and ate! Here's a picture of my sister and I + one of my plate of food!

On Friday I went to a morning Zumba class! It was such a great way to start my morning. Bellow is a screen shot of my check in on Facebook.

I also posted two posts about what I'm Thankful for! It was really nice to shop some gratitude on my blog!

How I Come Closer to Jesus

Hey everyone! As a college student it can be hard to know how to actively pursue God in ways that are practical to your busy life, so I just wanted to take the time to share some things I do come closer to Jesus. I hope you enjoy this!

Taking notes in the Worship Experience
I find that if I take notes while listening to the sermon I'm more engaged and remember the parts that really spoke to me better. Having these notes is also good if you have time to look back and revisit throughout the week (not that get that luxury often...)
Listening to worship music/scripture in the car
My Pastor has a saying "my praise breaks chains" and I have found this to be so true. Utilizing the time I'm in my car to listen to worship music helps me surrender my fears and anxieties and refocuses my mind and my perspective.
Being open to a Godly community (my eGroup)
At my church we have small groups as a way to have a community and grow in our relationship with God. I began going to one in September and I've found that I really enjoy being open to share and open to receive in this group.
Following She Reads Truth reading plan
If I'm being honest, this is something that I'm always able to keep on top of, but when I am participating in this is find it helps so much.

Praying for God to work on my perspective
My Pastor has preached a surmon on a blessed perspective that really struck a cord with me. Since then I've prayed a lot about asking God to work on my perspective and He really has! I've found that now when I have a bad day, I'm am to stop and say "this is just God reminding me that I need Him, that I can't  forget Him"
So I'd love to here from you. What you do for your relationship with Him?

Shows I Love to Binge Watch

Hey everyone! So I think binge watching tv shows is something that's become really popular (espically with people my age). We probably know we shouldn't watch too much tv, but sometimes everyone just need those days spent in bed watching our faves! So I thought it'd be fun to share my favorite shows to binge watch! I will warn you that these are not the only shows I watch, these are just the ones that I will spend many hours watching countless episodes on- HAHA! (btw- I have Hulu, so I know these shows are on there, but I'm not sure if they are on Netflix or not.)

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Law & Order: SVU
Amazing Race
America's Next Top Model

So what do y'all love to watch? What shows are you watching lately? Have you watched any of the shows I mentioned?

Jornal Jar Prompts

Hey everyone! A little while back I wanted to get back into journaling, so I came up with the idea of making a Journal Jar (it's simply a jar full of writing prompts that I can pull out at random whenever I want to write). I decided to blog about it (the post is linked here) and a few people expressed interest seeing the list of prompts I actually ended up putting into the jar. So I thought I'd go ahead a list them in a blog post!

First I just wanted to tell y'all how I came up with the prompts. Some I found online. If you just google "Journaling Prompts" tons of list posts with many ideas come up. I looked at many different sites and just picked and chose which ones I wanted. I also made a few up. While searching online, I got a couple ideas for something else I thought it would be really fun to write about.

My fire is giving kids with special needs a chance to grow and fear will not extinguish it.
For most of my life, I've had the desire to teach kids with special needs. I knew these children were not merely just "special" but "wonderful" and "remarkable." I knew what these kids needed was someone who loved them enough to help them grow. I believed I was that person. I knew I couldn't touch every child's life, but I knew I could make a real difference in my own classroom one day. So I set my sights on achieving just that. This was my fire. I got into the college of my dreams as a pre-special education major. Each day I go to class gets me one step closer to owing my fire.
But I have met some opposition along the way- mostly in the form of fear. I feared that people wouldn't understand my fire. I feared that  I hadn't listened to God correctly and that this was not my fire after all. I feared that maybe I wasn't called to teach. I feared I didn't have the ability to make it happen. I feared I had it all wrong.
Today, I'm telling the world that my fire is stronger than my fear. I'm letting the world know that I am capable of giving kids with special needs a chance to grow. I'm showing the world what I'm made of. I'm owing my fire.
Now I want YOU  to own you're fire.
It's wonderful.
It's powerful.
It's important.
I want you to fill in the phrase:

My fire is _____ and _____ will not extinguish it.
Tweet it. Blog it. Facebook it. Instagram it. Post it to Tumblr. Tell your friends and family about it. Whatever it is you need to do to get it out and proclaim it to the world. You have a fire inside of you just dying to be seen. Show it. Own it.
This generation has the potential to change the world. Lets not let it go to waste. Own your fire.

(Thank you to Firework People and Ashley Beaudin for the beautiful graphics!)

Fall Break Recap!

Hey y'all! I just got done with fall break and getting back into classes, so I thought it would be fun to just kind of do a run down on how my fall break went! I didn't go anywhere too spectacular. I didn't hang out with too many different people. BUT I did do some pretty fun stuff I thought I'd share. So my fall break ended up being a little longer than usual. My math professor canceled class Friday afternoon, so I was able to start my break at 11 o'clock on October 9th! We had the weekend as well as Monday and Tuesday off. Then to make things even better, my education professor canceled class Wednesday morning, so I didn't have to go to class until Wednesday afternoon! Yay! It was so great to have worked out this way!

After class on Friday (as well as part of Saturday), I spent some time putting together a fun Journal Prompt Jar! I blogged about it too; so check out more on that from the post linked here.

So Saturday night my family and some family friends with to a German restaurant to celebrate Oktoberfest! The food was awesome and we had some great laughs, too bad we had to walk through the mud to get to our cars at the end of the night :/ But even with the mud it was a great way to spend a Saturday night!

On Monday, I was really feeling the fall spirit and really wanted to get crafty. So I picked up a little pumpkin at the grocery store and decided to paint it. I blogged about this too; so check out the detailed process from the post linked here.

Lastly, my break was ending on Wednesday morning and my dad was leaving to go visit my grandma and grandpa for a week. But before I went to class, and before he headed to the airport, my mom, dad, and I were able to get some breakfast at Waffle House. I had a chocolate chip waffle and orange juice (too yummy!). It was a great way to end my fall break!

Overall, fall break was just what I needed. I was feeling exhausted and worn out. What I really needed was some relaxation and some fun times with my family. And that's just what I got. I was able to return to school reenergized and so ready to take on the rest of the semester! By the way, I really enjoy doing these life update type posts, so if you like reading them let me know so I can try to do them more often!

Pumpkin Painting!

Hey everyone! I've been on fall break and it's been feeling more and more like fall in North Carolina, so I just had to sit down and paint a pumpkin. So I thought I'd be fun to share a step by step process of my little craft project. I so hope you enjoy!

Here's a picture of me with the finished project (I just had to get a picture for Instagram right?!):

I just started out with a big black circle:

I then added polka dots in many fall colors all over the pumpkin:

Lastly, I added my initial!

Journal Prompt Jar

Hey y'all! Today I want to tell y'all about a simple little project I just started- my journal prompt jar!

So let me preface this post with some quick background: a few weeks ago I was having a hard time getting to sleep and I was starting to let things get to me and stress me out. I know what it's like to be super stressed; I didn't want to do that to myself anymore and frankly I needed some sleep! So I decided I'd try journaling before bed to help me. I've always loved to write and Lord knows I've got enough notebooks to handle my ramblings for a while. I found that it was working. But I also found that my writing always focused on what I did that day, which was only moderately effective in shutting my brain down.

So I thought journaling prompts were a good way to kind of focus my writing. So I decided to make a journal prompt jar.

It's really simple- I just looked online for journaling prompt I liked or ones I felt like I'd really be able to write about and added some of my own. I typed them up and cut them out into individual strips.

Then I just put them in a jar that was already at my house. The plan is to pick one out of the jar each night and just write!

I thought this was a really cute and fun idea that I just had to share! If y'all want to see the prompts I put into the jar I can totally do a blog post on it- just let me know if that's something you'd want to see! And I'm on fall break right now so I've got a craft project planned that I'll be blogging about so keep a look out for that one too!

18 Things I've learned in 18 Years

1. You're dreams may evolve or change altogether, but never give up on them. We're crazy sometimes. Sometimes we realize our dream isn't something we want anymore and something else is truly want we want. No matter what that dream is, no matter how may times its changed, don't give up on your dreams. Always go after your dream.

2. You're important too. In the midst of helping others, never forget your own worth. Your just as important as everyone else. You deserve amazing things. You deserve respect and love.

3. Love always conquers hate. It's easier to hate, it's easier to get stuck in too. Love isn't always easy, but I promise you it'll prevail.

4. Sometimes you need that day you don't get out of bed. It's ok to take a break. It's ok to rest and don't ever feel less about yourself because you feel tired.

5. Chinese food will always be delicious. It'll always be my favorite. End of story. Fried rice? YAS.

6. Take the time to learn about other countries and their culture. It's important to recognize that things exist outside of your own experiences. Taking the time to branch out and learn about those things will enrich your life.

7. You'll never regret being kind. If we're being honest, we aren't always kind and we don't always want to be kind. But if you make it a point to be kind, even in those moments of weakness, you'll never regret it.

8. Ya know- mom and dad are right sometimes. I think to the countless times they tried to take control of my decisions and how mad I got about it. Now I know that they knew exactly what I needed and where I belonged.

10. Always desire to discover new things. No matter what it is. Gaining new knowledge is always a good thing. Ignorance isn't bliss.

11. You're not perfect. And that's 100% ok. No matter how hard we try, we'll never be perfect. There's always going to be something. But let it be encouraging to you that there's absolutely nothing wrong with imperfection.

12. DANCE Never give up a chance to dance and have fun. It's those moments that make you feel alive.

13. A relationship with God is so necessary and so beautiful. The older I get the more apparent this becomes. I can't put into worlds how I truly feel about Him. I'm just so happy to know that I can grow to know a God who loves me so unconditionally.

14. Life is to short to focus on tomorrow. Live in the moment. Thinking about tomorrow will stress you out. Living for today will make you happy.

15. Reality TV will always be too good to pass up. Call it the proverbial train wreak if you will, but I'll always be obsessed with reality TV shows. What's not to love about Big Brother and Survivor?!

16. Life flys by. Enjoy every minute of it. I may only be 18 years old, but I've honestly found this to be so true. I blink an eye and I feel like a day, a week, or even a month have gone by. So I really think it's important to find the joy in everything.

17. You can never have too much jewelry. Well maybe you can, but that doesn't make me love it any less!

18. You're going to judge and have bias, that's normal, but that should NEVER effect how treat anyone. I believe this to be one of the most important things my parents have ever taught me, like ever. So may things happen when you choose to put any preconceived ideas about someone and just give them a chance.

Blogging Difficulties

Hey everyone! So many of you may (or may not) know that I've been blogging for only a short time. I started my blog on kind of a whim in January of this year (2015). I was so excited but didn't really know what to expect. Although I so enjoy it, I do struggle from time to time with some things. So I wanted to write this post about my blogging difficulties to show that I don't have it all figured out just yet (hoping it would encourage others dealing with struggle) and also to see if I could gain any insight from fellow bloggers. So my question would be to other bloggers who are reading this post: How have you dealt with these difficulties? Thanks in advance for everyone's feedback and I hope you enjoy as I open up to all my readers.

Telling people in "Real Life" about my blog.
By people in "real life" I mean family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) and people I go to school with. Since the beginning I have always been hesitant to tell these people about my blog or show them my content. Not that I don't want them to see it or that I'm not proud of it. I was just very fearful of all of the negative things that could come out of it. Recently, I have been much more open about my blog with the people in my life, but I'm always wondering in the back of my mind if I'm making the right decision.

Self Promotion.
I've never been someone to brag. Anytime I talk about something concerning myself I'm always trying to stay humble. However, part of blogging is putting yourself (and your content out there). Of course that's something I want to do- I am very proud of my content. However, I do wonder if there's a limit. Is there a such thing as too much self promotion?

Time Management.
Honestly, blogging takes up a lot of time. And so does the many other things that make up my life. I'm a college student with a lot of beautiful and amazing things on my plate. So I've really been trying to figure out the best way to mange my time and decide how much time I want to put into blogging. It's really something I enjoy and want to continue doing it. I just have to find that balance!

So fellow bloggers, I'd love to hear from you! Do you struggle with these things? Have you found ways to deal with them? Or do you have your own difficulties with writing a blog?

*Please don't take this post as me complaining about blogging, saying that I don't love to blog (or my readers), or saying that I no longer want to blog. I just wanted to be real with my readers about things I struggle with from time to time. I love to blog and don't plan to stop anytime soon!

Transition into Fall {Dress}

Hey everyone! So it's getting more and more like fall outside and I'm so incredibly excited! It's been so hot all summer in North Carolina so I'm in desperate need of the cool off! Anyway, I thought I'd show y'all this dress because I think it's a good transition piece! It's a tank style so you can still manage the warmer weather in it, but the print is so fall and would be so cute with a scarf and/or jean jacket! Hope y'all enjoy!

Hey everyone! Today I really wanted to just talk about the importance of celebration- is that ok?

Many of my readers know that I started college about a month ago, and if I'm being honest, as fun and wonderful it's been, it has been a little difficult at times. Trying to get all of your homework done on time can be overwhelming. Trying to make sure you're being healthy can be exhausting. Balancing "mental health" time and "fun time" can get stressful. Wanting to be involved but not wanting to be spread too thin is a constant struggle. Through all of this, I've realized the true importance of celebration.
We must celebrate all the good things. No matter how busy you become, or stressful life is, take the time to celebrate. Because we're faced with the simple true that those good times won't always last. Things will get though sometimes. So celebrate the good times when they happen. Through this journey I'm also learning to celebrate the small things too. More than just the big and monumental deserve a celebration. Often times we expect the little things, or we believe we deserve them, or we just look them over all together. I'm finally saying that not only do all these wonderful things deserve to be celebrated, we owe it to ourselves to celebrate these things. I think if we forget to celebrate we'll miss out on the most important thing in life- growing and learning through our experiences.
So celebrate a good day. Celebrate getting Panda Express for lunch. Celebrate the fact that you got yourself to bike 2 miles at the gym. Celebrate the fact you chose carrots instead of potatoe chips. Celebrate the wonderful friends and family in your life. Celebrate getting into college. Celebrate getting a good grade on your English test. Celebrate.

Here and Now

Each day I learn that the best thing for me is to focus on the here and now. Planning too far ahead only leads to scrambled plans, disappointment, unneeded stress, and the infamous "what if" game. But so much more is lost than that. You miss out on the present. You don't see the beauty around you. You let the many blessing of your current life pass you by. You allow what you believe you future needs to look like overpower what your life already has at your disposal.

While in high school I spent so much of my life planning for the future. I spent so much of my life making sure I was prepared for tomorrow. I spent too much time in the future and too little in the moment. I thought a lot about  what college I was getting into and what I was doing with the rest of my life instead of thinking a lot about the blessings I already had. Now I'm ready to make the present a priority.

So I want to challenge you {as well as myself}. Focus on the present. Be in the here and now. Stop to see the beauty and blessings around you. Make now a priority. Don't let the stress overtake you. Don't let the "what if" game run your life. Don't let your future spoil your current life. At the end of the day, we are never promised tomorrow, so be fully invested in what is promised- the here and now. I just want to encourage everyone to get the most out of your life. You deserve to fully love your life.
